Three Reasons to Consider Palatal Expanders
A palatal expander is an orthodontic device that attaches to the upper molars and gently widens the roof of your mouth (palate). Here at Dr. Jamie Goodreau DMD, your Chalfont, PA orthodontists recommend and treat children, teens, and even adults with palatal expanders to treat overly narrow palates to resolve several bite problems. There are three key reasons to consider palatal expanders:
1. To Relieve Overlapping, Impacted, or Crowded Teeth
Palatal expanders create more space in the upper jaw (the “maxilla”). This gives crowded teeth more room to adjust into proper positions so they fit together correctly. Sometimes a palate expander is used in conjunction with braces. These can straighten the teeth into positions created by even just a few millimeters of extra space created by a palatal expander.
2. To Correct Bite Alignment and Improve Nasal Breathing
The dimensions of the upper jaw directly affect how the lower and upper teeth align for chewing and speech. They also impact the dimensions of the nasal airway and how the tongue rests in the mouth. A palatal expander can widen a narrow maxilla to better align the bite, give the tongue more room, and expand the nasal airway for better breathing, especially at night.
3. To Alleviate Pain and Difficulty Chewing
A poorly aligned bite or narrow palate can make it difficult or painful to chew for some people, especially children. Our orthodontists in Chalfont, PA, may recommend early treatment with a palatal expander to help create extra room for the teeth, tongue, and jaw to make chewing more comfortable. Early palatal expansion can even eliminate or reduce the need for more complicated orthodontic treatment later in life.
